Tutor Mentor’s Activities

School of Mechanical Engineering (SME) is engaged in Tutor-mentoring activity for its students which is an unique platform for students to acquire not only academic and professional skills but they can interact and network to acquire help for other personal problems. We at SME understand that a student when he/she leaves their homes for an engineering degree undergoes a myriad of changes both interpersonally as well as professionally. Our tutor-mentor interaction program attaches each student to a faculty member, who helps, guides and nurtures the students at KIIT through regular interactive sessions with both students as well as their local guardians and parents. This helps parents and students utilize the numerous resources at KIIT effective, placement opportunities, career plans, coaching requirements, hostel issues, medical emergencies, even apprehend and arrest any behavioural and academic concerns, etc.

Student’s Interaction

The second Saturday of every month is practiced as the tutor-mentor day in which the students are required to meet and discuss their progress and problems with their tutor-mentors. The girls students are provided with female faculty members who visit their them at their hostels and interact freely with them. The international students are also associated with separate tutor-mentors who can relate and address their issues immediately. Students with history of drug abuse, violence, alcoholism and psychiatric issues are managed more intensely and minute with the help of this program.

Students expressed their concern about being indoor for a prolonged period due to the ongoing COVID crisis. They were eager to return back to the university campus due to the difficulty in adjusting to the online mode of learning anymore. Our faculties have counselled the students to stay calm and explained the consequences of overcrowding in the current scenario, considering the huge student population of KIIT DU including the teaching and non-teaching staff. Our faculties highlighted the urgency of the situation that warrants online mode of teaching and learning. They also advised students regarding academics related issues also highlighted on the new virtual mode of teaching lab classes, where recorded videos are generated by faculties to enhance student learning. The final semester students were inspired to explore online workshops and computational learning programmes apart from their course work provided by the SME. Students are also advised to attend/participate in the short term internship projects in various research labs inside and outside of SME once the students return back to the university campus. Currently, the students can attend/participate online short term internship projects offered by various companies. There were also discussion about how students can get in to various activities and hobbies to support their mental health and remain focused. At the end, students were advised to remain regular during the tutor mentor’s session and contact their respective mentors for guidance.

KIIT SME is a classic branch with full of opportunities, be it from academic point of view or placement. Abundance of societies and inter-branch projects makes the learning even more interesting. The teachers are always there to help you on and off duty and mentors are not only your guides, teachers but also your friend. The ways of teaching is enough to make one fall in love with the machines. Although in my job I don’t get to use the technical learnings of mechanical in day to day basis, but those 4 years have shaped me into who I am today as a person.

I was a student of B.Tech (2017-2021) batch. I am grateful to have such an excellent experience of the Mentor-Mentee programme at SME. I am currently engaged as a Deputy Manager in ICICI Bank.
